Faculty Development Companion Workbook: Techniques for Classroom Presentation Module 3

Mod 3 focuses on the actual classroom presentation and important skills required for successful instruction. Topics include basic presentation techniques, strategies for using lecture, questioning and discussion skills, and effective listening. The sections included in this module are as follows: Section 1: Dynamic Presentation Techniques Section 1 discusses numerous techniques for audience presentations, specifically the college classroom. Methods of assessing delivery techniques and for making improvements are suggested. Recommendations for using instructional media and visual aids are also included. Section 2: Effective Listening Techniques Section 2 focuses on developing effective listening skills and creating a supportive classroom environment. Student learning is enhanced when an instructor is engaged and understands the motives behind what students may be saying and not saying. Section 3: Effective Questioning Techniques Section 3 focuses on developing techniques for using effective questioning to facilitate learning in the classroom. It discusses how instructors can tailor questions to elicit higher-level thinking in students. It explores methods of responding to students that encourage critical thinking and problem solving. Section 4: Effective Lecture Techniques Section 4 discusses effective lecture techniques that instructors of adult learners can use in the college classroom. Though lecture should not be the dominating teaching methodology for the adult learner, it is an effective delivery method for specific types of content. Section 4 presents strategies for planning, delivering, and following up on the dynamic and effective lectures that are appropriate for the adult learner. Section 5: Effective Discussion Techniques Section 5 reviews effective discussion techniques, focusing on facilitating discussion and avoiding barriers to participation. It emphasizes the educational benefits of discussion in the learning process
