Pushkin Press, 1937. Centenary Edition. Specially printed by Curwen Press numbered 174/775. This edition is a piece of literary history, issued on the centenary of Pushkin's death with an introduction by Desmond MacCarthy of Bloomsbury Group fame. The Pushkin Press was a venture of poet and Modernist publisher, John Rodker and was a short lived attempt to publish Russian novels in translation. The cover design is in high modernist geometrics with lovely woodcut illustrations by M.V. Doubjinsky. Folio volume with leather spine, there is fading to the top of cover and top of spine, with lightly speckled foxing on page edges, covers slightly bumped but with clean page contents and a good binding. A rare piece and a fine product of a Modernist independent press. An absolute gem.
