Crossing Barriers: People Who Overcame

This study portrays 40 individuals who have overcome serious challenges, such as disease, disability, prejudice, or war and accident. These men and women represent a diversity of age spans, nationalities and religions. Some names, such as Frederick Douglass, Betty Ford, Johnny Cash, Golda Meir and Nelson Rockefeller are familiar to all; some are not so familiar. Many fit into the broader scope of social movements or wars - for example, abolitionism, civil rights and the Vietnam war, or into efforts to benefit victims of drug and alcohol abuse, AIDS, child and marital abuse and censorship. All leave behind a legacy of courage and hope. This book aims to further understanding and respect for all human beings regardless of circumstances, should be enjoyed by young and old alike.
