Chtimi: The Urban Vernaculars of Northern France

This study analyzes the key features of pronunciation and grammatical structure of the regional French spoken in the Lille conurbation, seen from both the descriptive and sociolinguistic standpoints. It shows how social and economic developments correspond to changes in the language use of ordinary people, who, within a few generations have shifted from patois to a variety of French that still marks their regional identity.
