A number of the essays in this volume were originally published as a part of a special issue of the Michigan Quarterly Review entitled “The Bible and Its Traditions.” Added to these articles are new contributions by F. I. Andersen (“On Reading Genesis 1–3”), David Blamires (“The Use of the Bible in The Roman Quarry of David Jones”), Tikva Frymer-Kensky (“Biblical Cosmology”), and Baruch Levine (“The Language of Holiness: Perceptions of the Sacred in the Hebrew Bible”).
