Australian Protocol and Procedures
Synopsis
The third edition of the authoritative reference work ""Australian Protocol & Procedures"" is a comprehensive guide to all aspects of behaviour in public and private occasions. For many years and through two editions, ""Australian Protocol and Procedures"" by Sir Asher Joel was the nation's only authoritative guide to 'acceptable' social and official behaviour. Renowned for its clear and straightforward language, the book's coverage of subjects was truly vast, including official protocol and procedures such as in Parliamentary settings, visits by heads of state (including royals), religious observances, court proceedings, the honours system and decorations and as more private protocols associated with invitations, wedding receptions, funerals and dress codes. Unfortunately, Sir Asher died in 1998 and ""Australian Protocols and Procedures"" was declared out of print. Even so, ongoing demand for the work remained high. UNSW Press decided to revive this important and authoritative reference work as a third edition, with Dr Helen Pringle taking on the task of revising the many sections of the book that had become dated. Since the publication of the second edition of Australian Protocols and Procedures in 1988 many of our customs and formalities have evolved to a very significant extent. Some of the more striking changes that are reflected in the revision are the ongoing evolution of Australia as a multicultural society, the growth in contact, including trade, with the countries of Asia, the emergence of Aboriginal issues, the growing role of women in public life, and the development of a more distinctively Australian system of legal and political practices, as well as the further evolution of our honours system. Dr Pringle Helen has brought ""Australian Protocols and Procedures"" into the 21st century, retaining the authority and scope of previous editions, as well as the clear and accessible writing style for which the work was rightly renowned. ""Australian Protocols and Procedures"" will be an essential reference for all government departments and community and other organisations, as well as anyone dealing with the public or in industry and commerce. For anyone at a loss to know the correct or accepted procedure, the book will provide an invaluable source of help.
