Artificial Reefs

Artificial reefs are an example of designed habitat-alteration for our environmental and commercial benefit. Many millions of dollars have been spent and thousands of reefs built, particularly in the US and Japan. They are an ideal tool for investigations on ecological roles of marine organisms and at a more commercial level, fisheries and coastal habitat management. The aim of this volume is to bring together reef research work carried out since the 1970s. The book focuses on European research thereby offering a source of comparative information. The book will incorporate coverage of freshwater reefs which other books lack. The book is aimed primarily at research/professionals in the areas of marine and environmental science, marine ecology and fisheries, as well as coastal zone planners involved with habitat engineering and ecotoxicologists involved in initial design and monitoring of reef establishment.
