Man Booker Shortlist Announced

The Man Booker shortlist was announced today, leaving six contenders for the distinguished accolade. With pre-longlist controversy surrounding the expansion of the author criteria, and post-longlist controversy over male-domination, any widespread criticism of the shortlist would have left the prize itself, rather than the novel and author to which it is awarded, firmly in the spotlight. Thankfully, no such criticism has been made. In general reaction to the announcement has been positive, with the main surprise coming in the shape of David Mitchell’s ‘Bone Clocks’, the original favourite for the award that has now been, to overly dramatise it, eliminated. What is left, however, is an array of fascinating titles. The Shortlist in full:

– Joshua Ferris (USA) – To Rise Again at a Decent Hour

– Karen Joy Fowler (USA) – We are all Completely Beside Ourselves

– Richard Flanagan (AUS) – The Narrow Road to the Deep North

– Howard Jacobson (GBR) – J

– Neel Mukherjee (GBR) – The Lives of Others

– Ali Smith (GBR) – How to Be Both
