The Anarchy: The East India Company – with William Dalrymple

Date: Thursday 3 October 2019
Location: Hatchards Piccadilly

The infamous East India Company was far more than just an international trading corporation, dealing in silks and spices. In fact, its founding charter authorised it to ‘wage war’.

We are thrilled to welcome William Dalrymple to Hatchards for a very special evening to mark the publication of his extraordinary new book The Anarchy.

William is one of Britain’s greatest historians, known for bestselling, prize-winning titles including In Xandau, The Last Mughal, and Koh-I-Nor. Tonight he will be discussing his research into the history of the East India Company. The Anarchy tells the tale of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated to be replaced by an aggressive colonial power in the guise of a multinational business ruling almost the whole of India from a boardroom in London. The result is a timely cautionary tale of global corporate power and imperialism.
