Business as Usual: An evening with Lucinda Gosling of Mary Evans Picture Library and Kate Macdonald of Handheld Press
Tuesday 24 March, 6.30pm
Business as Usual by Jane Oliver and Ann Stafford was first published in 1933, a novel of a single woman’s life in 1930s London, finding a job, learning the ropes, renting a flat, finding a life. Hilary Fane is determined to find a job in London to support herself for a year before she marries her Edinburgh fiancé. It’s a struggle, but she gets work as a typist in Everyman’s (a thinly disguised Selfridges). She works her way up into the books department, and then into the library, where she becomes a modernising force of sympathy and good sense. But not everyone agrees with what she wants to do.
This delightful, charming, funny and perceptive novel is being republished by Handheld Press with the original illustrations by Ann Stafford.
£10 tickets are available at the shop and online here.
Lucinda Gosling of Mary Evans Picture Library will speak about the importance of vintage images on republished classics, and the world of 1930s London that this Morris Owner magazine cover conjures up.
Kate Macdonald of Handheld Press will tell the story of how she discovered this novel in a charity booksale, nearly missed her stop reading it on the way home, and then began the search for the long-forgotten authors.
