In the Name of the Family by Sarah Dunant

The family in this wonderful historical novel are the Borgias: brutal, scheming and remarkable. The story opens in 1502: Rodrigo Borgia is on the Papal throne, his daughter Lucrezia just becoming aware of her own power and his son Cesare advancing his military career. At the same time Machiavelli is consolidating his own power. Interestingly sympathetic towards the family, Sarah Dunant has written a thoroughly researched and compelling story.
