Michael Rosen is best known as a children’s writer but this book shows he is also a skilled biographer. In 1898 Zola was forced to flee France and settled in a south London suburb where he developed a horror of English food and manners and juggled a complicated private life. Sympathetic to his subject, Michael Rosen has produced a thoroughly absorbing book.
