Synopsis

William Phalarope is an Englishman who was brought up and schooled in the 'old ways'. Although a genial enough fellow, William has an unfortunate tendency to speak his mind at times when, almost certainly, a discrete silence would be more appropriate... This is the sequel to Simon Caley's first book, William's Way, and follows our protagonist in his latest round of humorous adventures. William's niece, Mirabella, plays a prominent role in the story and is mainly responsible for the new barrage of vicissitudes that assails him. Despite being a bit older, William hasn't mellowed and is as non-compliant as ever: he is still going to either be someone's first or last choice to sit next to them at a dinner party. As with William's Way, readers are invited to accompany William as he negotiates another extraordinary section of his life; and this time it's one that leads him to surmise that he must have done something dreadful in a previous incarnation. Written from William's point of view, the story goes to places and events that William would much rather have bypassed, as he is faced with challenges of both a physical and psychological nature. Well written and well researched, the book is full of humour - some very obvious, some very subtle - and leaves the reader in little doubt that the author did more than simply use his imagination.
