WAIT FOR ME! THE MEMOIRS OF THE YOUNGEST MITFORD SISTER
by DEBORAH DEVONSHIRE
Thursday 9 September 12.30-1.30pm
Hatchards is pleased to announce that Deborah Devonshire will be signing copies of her new book 'Wait for Me! Memoirs of the Youngest Mitford Sister' (John Murray). Deborah Devonshire is a natural writer with a knack for the telling phrase and for hitting the nail on the head. She tells the story of her upbringing, lovingly and wittily describing her parents (so memorably fictionalised by her sister Nancy); she talks candidly about her brother and sisters, and their politics (while not being at all political herself), finally setting the record straight. Throughout the book she writes brilliantly about the country and her deep attachment to it and those who live and work in it. As Duchess of Devonshire, Debo played an active role in restoring and overseeing the day-to-day running of the family houses and gardens, and in developing commercial enterprises at Chatsworth. She tells poignantly of the deaths of three of her children, as well as her husband’s battle with alcohol addiction. 'Wait For Me!' is enthralling and a total joy, full of the author’s sympathetic wit (which she is not afraid to use on herself).

HANDLING EDNA
by BARRY HUMPHRIES
Thursday 23 September 12.30-1.30pm
Hatchards is pleased to announce that Barry Humphries will be signing copies of his new book 'Handling Edna' (Weidenfeld & Nicolson). In this unauthorised biography of Dame Edna Everage, acquired for an unprecedented advance and in spectacular secrecy, her long-time manager and the man who was there from the very beginning, Barry Humphries, takes a behind-the-scenes, no-holds-barred look at an icon of our times. Superstar, swami, confidante and advisor to royalty, Hollywood stars and international political leaders, Dame Edna's life has catapulted her from her humble Moonee Ponds beginnings as a suburban housewife to the most elite social and artistic circles in the world. Who would have thought that this modest Australian woman could achieve so much from London to Louisiana to New York to Tokyo? Who could have anticipated her global fame? Barry Humphries certainly didn't. Dame Edna will not like this book but Barry knows everything - the who, the why and the where - and in this much-anticipated work he will, for the first time, reveal all. This exhaustively researched account of Edna's roller-coaster life will surely dominate the bestsellers lists. Essential reading for scholars, female achievers, fans of Dame Edna and those who feel that behind the fairytale career lies a darker and more sinister story.

TOTTERING-BY-GENTLY ANNUAL
by ANNIE TEMPEST
Thursday 7 October 1-2pm
Hatchards is pleased to announce that Annie Tempest will be signing copies of her new book The 'Tottering-by-Gently Annual' (Frances Lincoln). Annie Tempest is one of Britain's best-loved cartoonists and, since 1993, she has been charting the life of Daffy and Dicky Tottering in Tottering-by-Gently - the phenomenally successful weekly strip cartoon in Country Life magazine. Tottering-by-Gently is a village in the fictional county of North Pimmshire, where Lord and Lady Tottering (Dicky and Daffy) live in the fading grandeur of their ancestral home, Tottering Hall. Traditionally an annual is a bumper collection of stories / comic strips / features / games, puzzles plus things to make and do - and the Tottering-by-Gently Annual has all of the above and more. It is packed with comic strips, cartoons, recipes, puzzles and games featuring the characters from Tottering-by-Gently - Daffy and Dicky Tottering, their daughter Serena and grandchildren, Freddy and Daisy, along with the daily, Mrs Shagpile, not forgetting the dogs, Slobber and Scribble. Through this cast of characters, Annie Tempest casts her gimlet eye over the stuff of life, revealing truths around universal themes such as family, relationships, dieting, ageing, gardening and the different perspectives of men and women.
